She loved silk, had an affection for pressing and washing clothes, and always used spray starch. Finding a can of spray starch the other day reminded me of her, but also of the kind of household I grew up in.

I also learned this from my her mother and sisters, (my grandmother and aunts) in Brooklyn. My grandmother would wash clothes and hang them neatly around the ironing board on hangers. I have vivid memories of that ironing board next to her king-size bed in her pre-war Brooklyn apartment, where she’d lived for over 40 years. She was always dressed neatly — a cotton button-down shirt and slacks, or in her later years, a cotton sweatsuit in winter.

As a young woman, I remember her later years, pushing her cart along Church Avenue in Brooklyn, dressed in perfectly pressed slacks — probably a cotton blend — and always looking polished. She taught her daughters and grandchildren that clothes should be clean, pressed, and well-kept. As my mother always said: “You can’t put clean clothes on a dirty body.”

The Style of My Aunts
In Brooklyn, I had two stylish aunts. One worked at Sears for about 30 years and was always sharp and dressed to the nines. The other, a legal secretary, had fabulous suits and a signature red lip (both my aunts loved a red lip — my mom, not so much). Clothes were often passed down — my aunt gave me some of her legal secretary suits, and I still remember them fondly: linen in summer, neatly pressed, paired with kitten heels or sneakers for commuting.

These women, in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, dressed in what could pass today for Dior tailoring or a Bottega Veneta palette — well-cut, seasonless, and refined. Chic they were, but it wasn’t just about the clothes. It was their pride in their Jamaican heritage which was reflected in their mannerisms, and their warm and loving presence.

Look at my grandmother, in her apartment on Church Ave. in Brooklyn. She was affectionately called "MaDear." I don't know who took this picture or where she was going, but look how sweet she looked with her mauve dress, chic scarf, pocketbook and t-strap sandals. Also, she stayed with a fabulous roller set and her full-head of gray luscious hair.

My Own Clothing Journey
In my 20s and 30s, living in New York, finding great clothing felt effortless. On Church Avenue or Flatbush Avenue, you could visit a dressmaker or tailor to alter or create pieces. Even department stores like Sears offered good-quality suits that, with a little spray starch and a firm ironing, looked fabulous.

Over the years, my wardrobe evolved. Like many women, I started with fast fashion, then graduated through my own “shopping hierarchy”: Ann Taylor → J.Crew → BCBG (a personal favorite — I still own pieces from them, including two unworn until just last winter).

When I moved from New York to California, and later from Houston to Paris, I donated or sold many pieces — often on Poshmark — and still got great resale value because of the quality. I also rely on dry cleaners, despite the plastic waste (I try to limit it by asking them not to bundle garments together unnecessarily).

Closets Overflowing
In Houston, my aunt graciously unpacked boxes of clothes left behind when I moved to Paris. She hung and folded everything — and I realized I had nearly three closets full, including unworn pieces.
When my sister visited, we played dress-up for three hours. She took 15–20 pieces — from a sequined BCBG gown to an olive green satin maxi dress from Uniqlo, a white cotton dress from Nordstrom or Tory Burch, and the perfect pair of dark-wash Wrangler jeans (which I’m now jealous she owns). Many pieces came from one of my favorite brands, Alice & Olivia — the cut, the fabrics, the attention to detail still hold up years later.

Quality Over Quantity
These days, I’m more focused on:

Wearing my existing clothes more often.

Buying only special, well-made pieces.

Expanding my shoe options — especially summer sandals — to replace my current two walkable pairs in Paris.

My daily “uniform” is gym clothes for workouts, and a t-shirt with jeans for casual days. For dinners or events, I’ll reach for something with personality — a patterned silk blouse, a structured dress, or a statement blazer.

Details That Matter
One key tip from recent fashion research: look at the zippers. I have a stunning dress from Sea — beautiful pattern and flow — but a flimsy plastic zipper makes it a 10-minute ordeal to put on. I plan to take it to my Paris tailor and replace it with a heavy gold zipper worthy of a Saint Laurent corset.

Sea New York is a Premium Contemporary brand founded by Monica Paolini and Sean Monahan. Known for feminine, bohemian-inspired dresses, intricate embroidery, and eyelet lace. Priced above mid-market but below luxury designer. Dresses usually range from $350–$600 USD. Quality is strong for the category. Note the plastic zipper - I love the dress, so I will switch this plastic zipper out for a metal zipper which should eliminate the sticking problem.

Dress from Alice & Olivia, a Premium Contemporary brand out of NYC founded by Stacey Bendet. Known for playful prints, tailored pants, party dresses. Price point lower than luxury designer, but higher than mid-market.

A denim corset from Magda Butrym, Designer / Emerging Luxury, Polish label, positioned in the luxury segment with artisanal details and high-quality fabrics. Known for strong-shouldered blazers, ornate detailing, and high-end pricing.

Another important detail: pattern matching. At Saint Laurent, I learned how their lace patterns are always perfectly aligned — a hallmark of quality and craftsmanship. I’ve seen designer garments with bold florals or plaid where the patterns don’t match, and once you notice, you can’t unsee it. At $1,000+, that’s unacceptable.

With the Sea dress, the pattern is small and the construction so well considered that it’s not immediately apparent whether the pattern aligns perfectly — and in a case like that, I’m not scrutinizing for precision matching.

This Etro skirt, from the Italian designer label, features a larger pattern, and at certain seams the alignment isn’t perfect.

Mon propre parcours vestimentaire

The Break I Didn’t Know I Needed - From France

https://www.tsahiahobson.com/blog/the-break-i-didnt-know-i-needed-from-france

https://www.tsahiahobson.com/blog/the-break-i-didnt-know-i-needed-from-france#comments

Uncategorized

Hello amis! Summer of 2025, I had to take a step back — not with a meticulously planned “digital detox,” but because I simply couldn’t keep going at my usual pace. Curated by Olivier Saillard, this showcase delves into the profound creative dialogue and enduring friendship between two titans who redefined the aesthetics of the 1980s and 1990s. Allow yourself two hours to observe the designs, practice a little French by reading the captions, and watching the videos. Next, give yourself another two hours to check out a book and order lunch and a coffee at the cafe.

Alaïa x Mugler: A Meeting of Minds, Lines, and Savoir Faire
This exhibition is more than a fashion retrospective; it's a study in parallel brand genius. It celebrates the power of the feminine form and the architectural audacity of two couturiers who consistently defied conventions. The collection brilliantly juxtaposes their distinct, yet equally commanding, approaches to shaping the female silhouette.

Azzedine Alaïa: The Designer Who Refused the Fashion Calendar
Alaïa was no ordinary couturier – a vital lesson for today's brand strategists. He famously never bowed to the pressure of seasonal shows, preferring to release collections when they were ready. This audacious 'slow luxury' model prioritized craft and purity, offering a blueprint for brand integrity in an increasingly fast-paced industry. His former atelier, now a museum, was his creative universe, where he lived, worked, and hosted legendary soirées with cultural icons like Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, and Carla Sozzani.

Housed within Alaïa's intimate home, the exhibition offers an unparalleled glimpse into his meticulous creative process. Beyond the exquisite garments, visitors can discover rare archival footage, including:

An illuminating interview between Alaïa and the iconic Elsa Klensch (whose enthusiastic voice narrated the rise of fashion television in the '80s and '90s).

A behind-the-scenes documentary offering rare footage of Alaïa's creative journey—a true gem for fashion purists and content strategists alike.

Why Women Were Central to Alaïa's Vision
Alaïa's unwavering devotion to the female form is a masterclass in customer-centric design. His belief, famously articulated as "I make clothes, women make fashion," exemplifies a philosophy where the client is at the heart of the brand. His dresses unapologetically embraced curves, empowering women and defying the boyish trends of the 1990s.

By contrast, the Mugler pieces exude theatricality and futuristic sensuality, featuring wasp waists, vinyl corsets, and glass-cut tailoring. They project an image of women who are undeniably powerful, self-aware, and confident in their core identity. This dual perspective within the exhibition underscores how distinct brand philosophies can resonate deeply with target audiences, fostering unparalleled loyalty. The exhibit beautifully showcases their shared artistic language, with over 40 Mugler pieces from Alaïa's personal collection displayed alongside his creations, revealing a profound mutual admiration and creative dialogue.

Why This Matters for Luxury Marketing Today
In an age where fashion is fast, content is king, and heritage is constantly under reinvention, this exhibition does something rare: it centers craftsmanship, balance, and sophistication. For luxury marketers and brand storytellers, this collaboration underscores three strategic truths:

Cultural Capital is Earned Slowly, Curated Intentionally: Alaïa's refusal to rush collections allowed him to retain brand purity—an ethos younger luxury houses should heed. Actual brand authority is built through patient, authentic cultivation.

Collaboration Must Be a Narrative: The Alaïa x Mugler showcase is built on shared values—the body, the future, the woman. This deep narrative draws the viewer (and potential client) closer to both brands, their creators, and their stories.

The Physical Experience Still Reigns Supreme: As luxury brands chase digital innovation, this museum reminds us that nothing replaces the emotional charge of seeing couture up close, surrounded by the history that birthed it. It underscores the power of immersive, sensory brand environments.

Final Thoughts: A Sacred Space Worth Visiting
If you're in Paris before the show closes, I highly recommend a visit. The exhibition at the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa is one of the city's most profound, yet quiet, insights into luxury fashion history. It's an opportunity to be deeply moved and inspired, leaving you with fresh perspectives on brand integrity, customer connection, and timeless design.

If you can't make it in person, stay tuned – I'll share more from this insightful exhibition on my YouTube channel, where fashion meets strategic storytelling, always through a Parisian lens.

Visiting Details: Exhibition: Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler: 1980–1990, Two Decades of Artistic Affinities Location:Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, 18 Rue de la Verrerie, 75004 Paris, France Dates: Running until June 29, 2025 Admission: 10 euros.
Reference: https://fondationazzedinealaia.org/

The Champs-Élysées Window Display Project for Visual Merchandising

https://www.tsahiahobson.com/blog/the-champs-elysees-window-display-project-for-visual-merchandising

https://www.tsahiahobson.com/blog/the-champs-elysees-window-display-project-for-visual-merchandising#comments

Uncategorized

Bonjour à tous,Visual merchandising is often described as the silent language of luxury—a refined art that speaks before any words are exchanged. During my studies at Sup de Luxe in Paris, I had the opportunity to explore this discipline in greater depth through a project that challenged me and my colleagues (a team of four) to reinterpret the spirit of the 1990s within today's Parisian landscape. It was an invitation to blend fashion history, creative strategy, and cultural storytelling into one cohesive, visually compelling display.

At its core, visual merchandising orchestrates space, emotion, and brand identity. I realized that it's a discipline that means more than arranging objects; it's a science of creating a universe that evokes a myriad of emotions in customers. In this luxury universe, every element matters: the textures, the lighting, the spacing between objects, and even the angle at which a handbag catches the light. Visual merchandising must translate the brand's DNA into an immediate, visceral experience that invites clients to admire and imagine themselves living within that world. In short, it must transform a passerby into a participant.

For this particular project, our assignment began with a simple but evocative question: How can visual merchandising revisit the emblematic codes of the 90s—a decade so full of contrasts and cultural collisions—and reframe them for contemporary Paris? The challenge was framed by a principle that I found deeply inspiring: "The essence of fashion is not homologation." In a world that increasingly values inclusion over sameness, how could we use the silent language of display to celebrate individuality through a 90s lens?

Our group was assigned le pull (sweater) as our iconic garment. The journey unfolded through research, trend analysis, and creative ideation. We examined the 90s not as a monolithic decade but as a vibrant mosaic: the rise of grunge alongside the minimalism of Calvin Klein, the birth of hip-hop luxury, and the street-style revolutions that made the sidewalks of Paris, New York, and Tokyo as influential as the runways. With its infinite iterations — oversized, ribbed, graphic, minimal — the sweater became our canvas for exploring these contrasts.

Through this experience, I saw visual merchandising act as an ambassador of cultural storytelling. It demands an understanding of history, an eye for beauty, and a sensitivity to the invisible emotional currents connecting clients to a brand. It is an art that lives at the intersections of memory, desire, and pleasure — and when done well, it leaves a lasting impression that lingers long after the passerby has walked away.

Here's an abbreviated version of our project, which features le pull and a reimagined window display for a Gucci store on the Champs Elysees.
