C'est ma vie à Paris!

Welcome to 2025: Why I Came to Paris

Bonjour and Happy 2025!
As we step into a new year filled with possibilities and all the Parisian fashion (Saint Laurent, Chanel, Hermès, Balmain, Dior...) that I could ask for, I want to take a moment to reflect on a journey that changed my life forever. Moving to Paris, France, was the boldest decision I’ve ever made. It’s a story about taking risks, embracing change, and pursuing a dream that had quietly waited for its moment to shine. As we look forward to what this year holds, let me share how it all began.

The Dream Begins
My story starts with my roots. My parents, born and raised on the small but mighty island of Jamaica, immigrated to the United States in the 1970s to pursue educational opportunities and the American Dream. Their journey inspired my own sense of ambition and determination. I spent my formative years in places like Iowa and New York, earning a Bachelor’s in Economics from The City College of New York—the same school my dad attended. I eventually earned a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Columbia University. For years, I thrived in the healthcare industry, working with multiple companies and launching my consulting business, Tsahia & Co., LLC, to support digital startups.
But something shifted. After years of dedication, I sought a different life with more autonomy and a deeper connection to beautiful art and culture. A trusted advisor asked me a simple yet profound question: “If money were no object, what would you do with your life?” At first, I couldn’t even imagine a life without the constraints of practicality—like my rent, health insurance costs, and food expenses. It took me at least two months to truly allow myself the freedom to dream. And when I did, the answer was clear: I would move to Paris, learn French, and start a new chapter focused on creativity and luxury.

Making the Leap
Once I had my answer, everything began to align. I enrolled in intensive French classes and arranged for student housing, giving myself six months to immerse myself in the language and culture. But I didn’t want this move to be aimless. I needed a purpose that combined my existing skills with my newfound passions. After researching programs, I discovered a Master’s in Global Luxury Marketing at Sup de Luxe—a program perfectly tailored to my love of fashion, art, and business.
With a clear plan, I left behind my life in Houston, Texas, packed my bags, and boarded a plane to Paris. A special shoutout to Air France for proposing the Business Class upgrade at check-in—it was worth it! Leaving everything I knew wasn’t easy, but the pull of this new adventure was more substantial than any fear of the unknown. Also, my friends and family were supportive and excited for me. They also uplifted me and gave me courage when I needed it.
Embracing the Parisian LifeLiving in Paris has been a whirlwind of inspiration and growth. Attending classes, navigating a new language, and soaking in the city’s culture, I’ve discovered a deeper connection to art, fashion, and luxury. Paris has challenged me to speed up while pushing me to achieve more. People might think life here is slow, but not when you’re launching a business and studying full-time! Still, it’s a place where I’ve learned to balance ambition with appreciation—where I can sit in a café, enjoy a glass of wine, and reflect on my journey while dreaming of what’s next.

Looking Ahead to 2025
As we begin this year, I’m excited about what lies ahead. 2024 was a year of transformation, and 2025 is the perfect time to build on those foundations. I’m continuing to deepen my studies in luxury marketing, refine my French language skills, and embrace all that Paris has to offer. Being in Paris also allows us the unique opportunity to visit flagship stores, museums, and galleries to experience the heritage of the brands we love. Walking through places like the Musée Carnavalet, the Hermès Petit H workshop, or the Grand Palais endears me to the appreciation of French art and culture. Hearing the story of Madame Veuve Clicquot, a widow (Veuve means widow in French) who created one of the most successful and recognizable brands in the world, is endlessly inspiring.
Every day here is a reminder that big dreams are worth chasing, and this city has given me the courage to keep pursuing them.

A Message for Dreamers
If you’ve ever dreamed of making a significant change or pursuing a passion, I want to remind you that it’s never too late. Taking risks can be daunting, but with planning, determination, and a little courage, you can create the life you’ve always envisioned. As a woman in my 40s, this journey proves that age is no barrier to reinvention. Whether moving to a new city, starting a new career, or simply shifting your mindset, the possibilities are endless when you allow yourself to dream.

Why the Wirkin Doesn't Make Sense — and Why Hermès Will Always Stay Ahead

1/2/2025

Bonjour! Bonne Année! I had to make some commentary and apply what I've been learning at school on the recent Walmès Wirkin (oh no!) bag that has created a stir across social media, with TikTok videos and memes turning it into a viral sensation. Positioned as a playful imitation of the iconic Hermès Birkin, the Wirkin is being touted by some as a way to "stick it" to luxury—a bold nod to exclusivity at a fraction of the cost. But let's take a closer look through the lens of luxury principles and brand analysis. Spoiler: the Wirkin doesn't just fall short; it fundamentally misunderstands what luxury is, because luxury is never dictated by the customer.
Picture
Kapferer, J. N., & Bastien, V. (2012). The luxury strategy (2nd ed.). Kogan Page. p. 139.
1. Luxury Is Defined by Heritage, Craftsmanship, and Client Experience Luxury is more than a price tag or a logo—it's rooted in three key pillars:
  • Heritage: A true luxury brand has a story, often spanning decades or centuries. Hermès, founded in 1837, is steeped in tradition and excellence. The Birkin bag represents this history and the cultural status it has achieved. The Wirkin, by contrast, has no memorable narrative. It's a mass-market product designed for quick thrills and fleeting virality, not timeless appeal.
  • Craftsmanship and Excellence: Every Birkin is handcrafted by artisans, taking 48 hours or more to create. The result is perfection in every stitch, handle, and clasp. The Wirkin is made in bulk with materials that often show discoloration, uneven stitching, and poorly finished hardware. The difference isn't subtle—it's glaring.
  • Client Experience: The journey to owning a Birkin is part of the allure. From entering a Hermès boutique to the personalized service you receive, it's an intimate and curated experience. Compare that to Walmart's factory-like aisles, fluorescent lighting, and self-checkout lanes. The environments—and the emotional resonance—couldn't be more different.

2. The Wirkin Misses the Hierarchy of Luxury
In the world of luxury, there's a hierarchy:
  • Art: Pieces that transcend function and become cultural icons.
  • Luxury: Products defined by exclusivity, craftsmanship, and legacy.
  • Craftsmanship: High-quality, accessible artisan-made products.
The Wirkin doesn't fit into this spectrum. It's neither art nor luxury nor an example of great craftsmanship. It's a novelty that trades on the aesthetics of exclusivity without delivering any substance.

3. Emotional Connection Matters
Luxury purchases are deeply emotional. Owning a Birkin is about more than the bag itself—it's about the feeling of belonging to an exclusive world, the pride in its craftsmanship, and the connection to Hermès's storied history.
The Wirkin, however, raises various emotions, if stemming from the desire to "dupe" a Birkin - these emotions may range from the adrenaline from a quick purchase and overnight shipping, resentment, or maybe genuine curiosity. Most videos that I watched on TikTok didn't seem to truly inspire joy, pride, or satisfaction. So, why spend money on something that doesn't elevate your style or emotions? If anything, the Wirkin's existence amplifies the Birkin's desirability and reminds those who own one why it's worth the investment.

4. Why "Sticking It" to Hermès Is Flawed Logic
Some argue that the Wirkin is a way to counter Hermès's exclusivity. But here's the irony: this logic fails.
  • Luxury thrives on Exclusivity. Hermès isn't trying to appeal to the masses; it's intentionally distanced. The Wirkin doesn't threaten Hermès; it reinforces its status by highlighting how unattainable and aspirational the Birkin remains.
  • Attention to Detail: Luxury buyers know what they're paying for. If you're spending $10,000 or more on a bag, you're attuned to the finer details—the stitching, the leather, the hardware—all of which are missing from the Wirkin. Hermès buyers aren't fooled, and they aren't leaving.

5. Practical Issues with the Wirkin
Beyond philosophy, the Wirkin also struggles on a practical level:
  • Durability Problems: Videos show discoloration, poor stitching, and wear after minimal use. While a Birkin is made to last generations, the Wirkin seems disposable.
  • Design Missteps: Some buyers are upset it doesn't come with a strap—a clear indicator of misunderstanding, as no Birkin includes one. The shiny, plastic-like hardware is another dead giveaway.
  • Price Creep: Originally priced at $62, the Wirkin has now climbed to $268, and in some cases, it's sold out!

Picture
Spot the difference: This 'Kelly Shoulder Bag' from Walmart may claim genuine leather, but it misses all of the critical and iconic Hermès details—no lock, mismatched stitching, hidden flaws, and overly shiny hardware. A reminder that true luxury lies in craftsmanship, not imitation. 6. The Sustainability Question
Sustainability is becoming a cornerstone of modern luxury. Hermès invests in eco-friendly sourcing and ensures its products are made to last a lifetime. They've also created the Petit H studio, where you can purchase items made from silks and leathers that have been repurposed into new products. The Wirkin, by contrast, embodies fast fashion: disposable, poorly made, and environmentally unsustainable. Buying fewer, higher-quality items--whether luxury or artisanal—is always the better choice for your wardrobe and the planet.

7. Why Hermès Will Continue to Thrive
Despite the buzz, Hermès is unbothered by the Wirkin trend. Here's why:
  • Timeless Appeal: The Birkin is more than a bag; it's a cultural icon with a history that's impossible to replicate. The Wirkin doesn't dilute this—it underscores it.
  • Loyal Clientele: Hermès caters to a specific audience that values exclusivity, artistry, and legacy. These clients aren't heading to Walmart for alternatives.
  • Elevated Desire: Trends like the Wirkin don't diminish Hermès; they amplify it. The more people talk about "dupes," the more aspirational the original becomes.

8. Suggestions for Aspirational Buyers
If you love the Birkin aesthetic but can't justify the price, consider these alternatives:
  • Buy What You Love: Invest in pieces that resonate with your style and values.
  • Support Artisans: Many independent designers create high-quality, handcrafted bags with unique designs. These purchases often carry more soul than any imitation.
  • Explore Entry-Level Luxury: Hermès offers smaller items like scarves or leather goods that provide a taste of its heritage without the full investment. Preloved markets are also a fantastic option. Check out some of my blog posts and YouTube videos where I discuss some of my favorite preloved items, how I found them and style them.

My Final Thoughts
The Wirkin may have sparked a viral moment, but it fails to capture the essence of luxury. Hermès, with its unmatched legacy and craftsmanship, continues to set the diamond standard and remains untouchable. Viral trends like this may entertain but also reveal a deeper yearning for quality, beauty, and timeless design that the Wirkin will not fulfill long-term.
It will be interesting to see how markets outside the U.S., such as China and parts of Europe, will respond to the Wirkin. In these regions, the importance of heritage, exclusivity, and craftsmanship dominates luxury purchasing behavior, further solidifying Hermès's global prestige.
Fashion trends may come and go, but true luxury endures. As the Wirkin buzz fades, Birkin's iconic status will remain as solid as ever.

A bientôt!

Thoughts on Parisian Accessories continued...

Bonjour, mes amis!
It's officially 2025, and after a week of much-needed rest from my studies, I feel rejuvenated and ready for the year ahead. The break has been a gift, allowing me to reconnect with friends I love and anticipate reunions with others I haven't seen in nearly a decade. One reunion I'm incredibly excited about is with my dear friend Faith. We met while working at Columbia University, bonded over our shared Jamaican heritage, and stayed close despite living in different parts of the U.S. Now, our paths cross again in this magical city called Paris. I can't wait to meet her family and rediscover the city together.
A Parisian Morning Filled with Discovery
But let me take you back to Lundi, 30 décembre — just before New Year's Eve in Paris, a day filled with everything I adore: beauty, discovery, SAINT LAURENT, and strolling through the city. It started with a leisurely morning, waking up at 9 AM, and I went to get my eyebrows done at Atelier du Sourcil near Montparnasse. Then, I planned a visit to a jewelry boutique in the 6th arrondissement. I've been hunting for accessories to elevate my outfits — because, let's face it, a well-chosen piece can transform an entire look. I share my French accessories in my latest YouTube video.

Strolling Through Jardin du Luxembourg

After my eyebrows were trimmed and shaped, I took a stroll to see the Cartier Foundation—although I knew it would be closed. Then, I walked to the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is still breathtakingly peaceful even in winter.

The Jewelry Boutique That Sparked Inspiration
This boutique, N.Villaret, owned by a charming woman, caught my eye with its beautifully styled displays. One cross necklace immediately reminded me of Rihanna's iconic pink jacket ensemble, paired with layered chains, which I believe are either vintage Chanel or Christian Lacroix. Inspired, I stopped in to explore. Though my French is still a work in progress, shopping has been a surprisingly effective way to practice. The boutique owner graciously allowed me to photograph some styling ideas for her layered jewelry pieces, which I later shared on Instagram to get opinions from my followers. To my surprise, the most popular look didn't include the cross!

What truly sets this boutique apart is its one-on-one approach. I am unsure if the owner ships items internationally; as she doesn't have a huge online presence—her focus is purely on creating an intimate, personal shopping experience. It's these unique aspects of small Parisian businesses that make them so special. However, you can find her on IG @nvillaret.

The Look That Started It All: A Royal Flowered Robe This royal flowered robe is truly the epitome of luxurious elegance. With its rich greens and vibrant reds, it became an instant standout favorite. The delicate striped lining adds a subtle yet exquisite touch of contrast, elevating the overall design. What makes this piece so versatile is its ability to transition seamlessly from home to outdoors, embodying the luxe pajama trend. Pair it with carefully curated layered jewelry, and you’ve created a rich, textured ensemble full of intricate details and one-of-a-kind charm. Whether styled for intimate gatherings or casual outings, this robe exudes timeless sophistication and unique artistry.

Update: THE WINNING LOOK!

In addition to jewelry, she also stocks coats, robes, and some household textiles like pillows and rugs.
I had to rush out of the store because the delivery person from SAINT LAURENT called me, stating he was there with my package. So, I told the shop owner I would think about the pieces and return with my decision. I got to my home and received my package! Yay —a little Parisian magic. SAINT LAURENT  delivered a stunning black open-back cocktail top and perfectly tailored gray jeans I'd purchased earlier. I haven't opened the package yet, but I can't wait to style and share them with you soon.

This is my last SAINT LAURENT purchase of 2024! I couldn’t help but giggle in my YouTube video as I went over my growing collection of SAINT LAURENT accessories. It’s no secret that this is my absolute favorite brand, and with good reason—each piece feels like a timeless treasure. Now, I can’t wait to reveal what’s inside this bag! Stay tuned for the unboxing and styling—you’re going to love it as much as I do.

Curating My Parisian Life: Style, Textiles, and Timeless Comforts

Bonjour, mes amis!
Paris has a way of turning the simplest moments into something extraordinary, and New Year's Eve was no different! I met a friend for a creative day exploring Le Marais, followed by the discovery and a cozy French seafood dinner with friends.

Capturing Perfect Moments with My Leica
My first stop was a lighting store to find a softbox for my apartment—perfect for enhancing natural light in my YouTube videos. As we wandered the streets, my friend became an impromptu photography subject. I captured his striking features with my Leica camera, even in the gray, cloudy light. The results? Stunning portraits that genuinely showcased the richness of his skin tone and character. It reminded me how vital good tools and techniques are in photography. I'm not going to post him here because he's shy! But, also he is using the images for his LinkedIn page. So, I'll let him share them first! Here are some other photos I captured near the Seine.

Discovering Vibrant Textiles in Le Marais
We continued our exploration and stumbled upon a boutique showcasing velour textiles that instantly caught my eye. I've been considering incorporating more color into my apartment, and the shop, En Fil d'Indienne's vibrant offerings were irresistible. The owner explained that the fabrics were a blend of French craftsmanship and Indian textiles, with options ranging from matte cotton velour to luxurious silk velour with a luminous finish. Naturally, my preference leaned toward the silk—because nothing says elegance quite like that subtle shimmer.

This gorgeous visually staged bed was by far my favorite part of the store. Don't you just want to jump in!

Pillows for everyone! The fabrics are quite stunning and some are designed in 100% cotton or a cotton and silk blend. They feel like a soft velour to the touch. I definitely want to accessorize my home with some special pieces.

I loved that some of the pieces can be used as you wish. This piece was made by hand, by one person from several saris stitched together. I can absolutely feel the love that went into this.

The Importance of Investing in Quality
This experience made me reflect on the importance of investing in quality, natural fibers. Choosing beautiful and sustainable materials feels like a win-win, whether for your wardrobe or home. After all, we spend so much time in our beds; why not envelop ourselves in fabrics that nurture comfort and style?

Adding Parisian Touches to My Home
The day ended with plans to infuse more personal touches into my space, from colorful pillows to a possible silk comforter. Romanticizing your home is essential to creating a life you love, and I've always believed that your bed and sofa should be the most comfortable places in your home. It's about adding those Parisian touches that make it truly mine.

Why Parisian Boutiques Are a Treasure Trove
If you're looking for unique pieces, Paris's small boutiques are a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind finds. Sometimes, you might even feel like you're the only one who owns a particular piece, and isn't that the essence of luxury? These intimate shopping experiences remind me why Paris is a haven for thoughtful, curated living.

Ending the Day with Fireworks and Gratitude
The day ended with a spectacular raw seafood platter, and fireworks lit up the Parisian sky. When my friend invited me, she told me it's typical for French people to have a seafood platter for NYE. According to Forbes,  "A typical French household buys over nine pounds (four kilos) of oysters in a year. Half of that is consumed over Christmas and New Year."
Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/karlsson/2023/12/28/french-christmas-and-new-year-is-a-celebration-of-food/
My favorites were the langoustines, escargot, and even the fresh scallops - which I didn't think could be eaten raw. Then, we walked up to Porte Maillot in Neuilly-sur-Sienne for fireworks - fabulous!

Reflections on the Year Ahead
As I reflected on the year ahead, my heart swelled with gratitude for this city, my friends, and the promise of new beginnings. The only thing that could have made it better? Having my family here to celebrate in this enchanting place.

How did you spend your New Year's Eve? Share your moments in the comments! How do you bring luxury and personality into your home? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
