Parisian life is a whirlwind of adjustments and discoveries. Today's adventures included a language exchange (unintentionally!), a near-commute-fail, and a glimmer of hope for a birthday trip to Morocco! French Faux Pas and Studying Struggles My morning began with a test that left me questioning my French fluency. Turns out, cramming after antibiotics isn't the best study strategy. On a brighter note, class offered an opportunity to practice active listening – by correcting someone else's test (a first for me!). Comfort Food Cravings and Parisian Products Missing my American staples, I realized leisurewear isn't the most practical choice for Parisian walks. The hunt for familiar products like Drano and edge control continues, reminding me of the cultural nuances in everyday routines. And where are the garbage bags?? I cannot find any garbage bags! Goutte d'Or: A Neighborhood to Explore A quick internet search revealed the name of the vibrant "little Africa" neighborhood – Goutte d'Or. I can't wait to explore its unique shops and restaurants! I think I can get my edge control here. Also, hopefully find a hair dresser who I can see sometime in the next two weeks. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow (Almost) While ponytails seem like my Parisian go-to hairstyle for now, the lure of braids remains strong. Remembering past tight-braid disasters, however, has me considering DIY solutions like box braiding my own hair again. Before a trip to Nassau in January, I spent like 5 hours box braiding my hair after binge watching YouTube girlies. I think the braids came out nicely, so I brought a few packs of hair with me to Paris. MetroCard Mishaps and Must-Do's A free train ride today was a happy surprise, but it's a reminder to get a MetroCard with a picture (and validate my visa!). Also, the other day when I was heading home from the Opera metro station, I (along with others) was asked to present our MetroCard to the agent for scanning. Luckily, I had funds on my card, otherwise what would have happened? Birthday in Marrakesh? Maybe! The highlight of my day? Discovering a potential school trip to Marrakesh coinciding with my birthday! Exploring Morocco has always been a dream, and the chance to learn from a local is even more exciting. Back in Houston, I would drive to Beaumont and visit a small Moroccan store L'Malam and buy wonderfully unique and handcrafted pieces. I've purchased a belt, rug, plates, and jewelry for my aunt. Funny enough, today (19 Avril) I passed a Moroccan restaurant - should have snapped a pic! Parisian Shopping Spree (Almost) A walk in the wind led me to stores overflowing with summer fashion. While a luxurious scarf caught my eye, practicality prevailed. Looks like I'll have to wait for some fall-friendly finds - even though it's still pretty cold at times! This Parisian adventure is full of unexpected turns, and I'm capturing it all one experience at a time.
